STUDENTS NANS DIVIDES OVER KASHAMU'S MERIT AWARD

Senator Buruji Kashamu

The Ogun state chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has dissociated itself from the award recently presented  by its national president to Senator Buruji Kashamu, the lawmaker representing Ogun East Senatorial District.

In a press release by the students’ body, which was signed by the Ogun state chairman, Comrade Dotun Opaleye, they queried the rationale behind given such meritorious award to a man of questionable character like Kashamu.

They described the presentation as a show of shame, reiterating their support for the anti corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The NANS/JCC Ogun chapter therefore called on the federal government to expedite action on the extradition of the lawmaker to face his case in the UK.

“Our attention has been drawn to an ignominious NANS award presented to Senator Buruji kashamu representing Ogun east senatorial district by our sinking National President, Titanic Usman.

“This incident is terribly disturbing to all sane minds and is capable of drawing the anti corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari backward, when men of questionable characters like Kashamu, who is wanted by American authorities for drug crimes, are celebrated by the apex students’ body.

“We sincerely ask what is so golden about Kashamu? Is it because he is a drug baron or the fact that he murdered the POP in the southwest?

“What has Kashamu done to Nigerian Students domiciled in Ogun state to merit such award? As even in his immediate environment, he has not been able to donate a single toilet to schools like Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago Iwoye or Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, AAP, Ijebu Igbo, not to mention other schools in his Senatorial District like TASUED.

“We express concern that it seems that  the federal government is becoming complacent in the extradition case of Kashamu, as we see no reason for the indolence.

“The leadership of NANS JCC OGUN AXIS led by COMRADE DOTUN OPALEYE hereby dissociates itself from this show of shame and reiterate our support for the anti corruption campaign of Mr President. The era of impunity has gone with the PDP government,” the statement read.

In a related development, social critics including a professor of law, Itse Sagay have berated the leadership of NANS for naming Kashamu, the senator who allegedly is a fugitive from US justice, as the ‘Golden Man of the Year’.
