CHELSEA CAN REPEAT THE 2012 HEROIC FEAT TO WIN THIS YEAR'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 'JOSE MOURINHO

Jose Mourinho believes that his Chelsea side may have a better chance of winning the Champions League this season

Jose Mourinho believes that Chelsea’s stuttering domestic form can provide the Blues with a chance to impress in the Champions League this season.

The west London side have endured a disastrous start to their Premier League title defence after slipping to seven defeats in their opening 13 top-flight games.

However, Chelsea can secure qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League with a game to spare if they overcome Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Dynamo Kiev fail to beat Porto on Tuesday night.

The west London club tasted Champions League glory back in 2012 after also struggling to find consistent form in the Premier League.

And Mourinho feels that his side’s position in the Premier League could give them an opportunity to shine in Europe.

Mourinho told his pre-match news conference on Monday afternoon: “I know – and also Chelsea – we know that sometimes you win when you are not the favourites.

“When I won it twice with Porto and Inter we were far from favourites. We were not even top 10 favourites.

“When Chelsea won, it was a very bad season they had and they won it. So we know the Champions League has these big doses of unpredictability.

“So, let’s try to qualify and live for the last match against Porto with a fight for the first.

“Objective one is to qualify. Objective two is to finish first and if we win this game we have a big chance to qualify immediately, but a victory is good for both objectives.”

Last season, when they won their group for the ninth time in their last 12 campaigns, the Blues remained unbeaten but went out on away goals in the round of 16 with a 2-2 home draw against Paris Saint-Germain after the first leg ended 1-1 in France.
