Ekiti PDP Chairman, chief Idowu Faleye arrested by the police

The embattled chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Ekiti state chapter, Chief Idowu Faleye, was reportedly arrested on Wednesday, August 26, for issuing a dud cheque to pay for the rent of the state secretariat.

According to a Leadership report, he was arrested by a special police squad from the force headquarters, Abuja.

His arrest is said to be connected with a petition written by the owner of the building, Chief Ropo Adesanya, who was issued the cheque which was rejected by an old generation bank based in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Adesanya, a former state PDP chairman who has since defected to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), was owed N1.5 million, which was one year’s rent for the secretariat building, and he had served the PDP an eviction notice following their failure to pay.

The state public relations officer, Alberto Adeyemi, confirmed the arrest, saying he was arrested by officers from the force headquarters who came from Abuja.

However, Faleye denied he was arrested, saying the story was the handiwork of his detractors.

“I was never taken to Abuja. We held a meeting at our party secretariat till around 3.3pm today. We were there when some people came in to report my purported arrest to me. I never signed any dud cheque. The police only asked me to say what I know about the cheque.

“I was only invited to state what I know about the cheque and not detained. After clarifying that it was not my signature that was on the cheque, they allowed me to leave the place,” the PDP chairman said.

According to Faleye, the cheque was jointly signed by Dr Tope Aluko and Tunde Olatunde.

He reportedly pleaded with the police to release him on health grounds as they wanted to take him to Abuja.

The PDP chair allegedly promised to report to the force headquarters on Tuesday after he had been examined and certified fit by his doctor.

Faleye’s release was reportedly secured by the former PDP chairman, Bola Olu-Ojo, and the special adviser to the governor on due process, Segun Akinwumi, who signed an undertaking promising to ensure he appears on Tuesday so they can begin the investigation of his involvement in the issuance of a dud cheque to the landlord.

Faleye had on August 16, divorced his wife, Olajumoke, after 28 years of  marriage. He claimed she was aggressive and unpredictable.

He also recently suspended four members of the State Working Committee (SWC). In reaction, one of those suspended, Tope Aluko, the secretary of the PDP, described him as an “impostor” who lacks the power to expel him.
