“Women who cover their heads are usually ignored in the fashion world.” Those were the words of Mariah Idrissi, a Pakistani and Moroccan origin model who lives in London, United Kingdom.
Mariah emerged as the woman to model in an hijab for the H&M campaign. The model who started wearing hijab at age 17 said, “It always feels like women who wear hijab are ignored when it comes to fashion… so it’s amazing that a brand that is big has H&M recognised the way we wear hijab.”
H&M who holds the record of the second biggest global retailer sent invitation to Mariah to star in an ad as a model scout, which she was sceptical about it at the initial stage, but with her parents approval, she went ahead on the basis of it being for a ‘good cause’.
The 23 year old, Mariah also said, the team at the shoot were mostly women, and that men were instructed not to touch her. She was also provided a special private dressing area.
Mariah owns a Moroccan-inspired beauty shop in London, where she offers henna tattoos and special Halal nail polish. The new H&M model has received a major boost on her Instagram page with about 3,500 new followers who appreciated her initiative and selflessness.
