Steven Gerrard has revealed that current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho sent him a handwritten letter before he had left Liverpool.
The England midfielder confirmed that the letter was delivered to him by John Terry following a charity game at Anfield in March this year.
The midfielder’s autobiography is currently being serialised, and in the latest instalment, Gerrard has described how Terry handed him a “handwritten letter, on Chelsea notepaper, from Mourinho to me.”
The veteran midfielder, who was released from Liverpool at the end of his contract at the tail end of last season, went on to reveal the contents of the letter:
“Dear Steve,
I know this isn’t yet over but first of all I want to congratulate you for the fantastic career at your heart club.
Secondly, I want to let you know my feeling of how sorry I am, for never seeing your work.
Thirdly, enjoy the day with your friends and family and your stadium, your fans, your memories.
Fourthly, the most important thing, ‘Be happy every day of your life with the smile of your kids!

Jose Mourinho”
It is intriguing that the Portuguese coach expressed regret at not having worked with the former England international. Mourinho tried to sign the Scouser on several occasions—most notably for Chelsea—although ultimately never succeeded in acquiring the Liverpol icon.
Mourinho’s public admiration for Gerrard comes in contrast to former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, who raised doubts about the player in his autobiography
After leaving Anfield at the end of last season, Gerrard moved to Los Angeles Galaxy, where the 25-year-old has made eight outings, scoring one goal and contributing three assists to date.
