Diego Simeone to Chelsea?
Chelsea are rumoured to be looking at Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone as a potential successor to Jose Mourinho should results fail to improve according to an article in the Daily Mirror.
It is to be believed based on reports from Portugal, that the Stamford Bridge based club are putting together a succession plan should the Portuguese fail to turn around performances which sees the blues sit a lowly 16th in the Premier League.
Simeone would fit Chelsea
Simeone is a popular figure at the Los Colchoneros as a result of his ruthless approach to games which has earned him the respect of players.
This quality means that Simeone would fit Chelsea because under the ‘Special One’, the players seem exhausted and easy to carve open all over the pitch as demonstrated by the likes of Southampton who won 3-1 last weekend on the Blues home turf.
The change might reinvigorate the Londoners fortunes and the Argentinians uncompromising style could put them back in the hunt for the major domestic and European trophies.
High financial cost
If Chelsea were to bring in the 45 year old then it will carry a high financial cost as a result of a new deal that Simeone signed with his La Liga club.
The new deal keeps him in La Liga till 2020 although there is a clause that will allow the former defensive midfielder to leave the club at the end of a season to the tune of £15 million should he or the club select to take up that option.
This will affect Chelsea if they want an emergency replacement manager should they sack their manager in the near future which according to the Daily Star last Thursday would cost them £37.5 million.
Will Simeone even want to leave his club to go and reunite with Falcao and Diego Costa who are struggling for goals and form this season?
Sticking it out in Spain may be a more lucrative option challenging the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid than leaving to come and manage in England, where managers live by results and owners aren’t afraid to dismiss bosses should their club have a poor run of form as Brendan Rodgers found out last weekend.
