Nigerians are quite a unique group of individuals. They are made up of over two hundred tribes and languages. They may have various cultural differences that distinguish them from one another, but ultimately, they are quite similar.
Today we are shifting focus away from their cultural differences and placing it upon their most common and distinguishable characteristics. Some people can spot a Nigerian a mile away simply by their looks alone. Consequently, there are some general behaviors that most Nigerians possess that makes it easier to spot them out in a crowd.
Keep on reading down below to find out Nikolai’s Top 5: How to Spot a Nigerian.
1. Competitive Dancing
Azonto, Shoki, Etighi, Sekem and Yahoozee are just a few unique dance moves Nigerians can be seen jiving to on the daily. Nigerian music is very upbeat and quite addictive. It requires dancers to be very energetic with their dance moves.
When listening to Nigerian music whether indoors or outdoors, Nigerians just can’t seem to control their body movement. They find themselves dancing from the car, to school, to the grocery stores and beyond. Whether it be at a school event, wedding or merely at home, they are always ready to murder the dance floor as it is their competitive ground.
2. Loud voices
Chai! This will never stop. Certain Nigerian tribes are criticized for having extra loud voices, but let’s be real, people from all Nigerian tribes can be loud. Whether it be over phone or when trying to explain themselves to someone right in front of them, one can’t help but wonder if they’re fighting a war when they speak.
It’s very funny to witness but can be quite disturbing in public. They don’t care oh! When a group of Nigerians gather around an area, be prepared for a show.
3. Changing their accents
Based on who a Nigerian is talking to, their accent changes quite a bit. They have an accent for when they’re talking to oyibos, akatas, family members and even their fellow Nigerians.
They can change from soft to thick tones in an instant. Nigerians who have lived abroad have their accents drift in and out based on the country where they grew up. Others find themselves picking up new intonation sounds on a weekly basis. We say those people speak “funnee”.
4. Every girl wants to sing like Beyoncé
Every Nigerian has a particular song or artist they listen to on a regular basis. They learn Nigerians songs quickly after a few times of hearing it replay.
Once they have mastered the lyrics, it’s over! They not only want you to know that they know the song, but they even want the artist who sang the song to hear them all the way from their village. If you think you can quiet them down…waste your time. Na the one man show in their minds and the spotlight is on them.
5. Eyeing
Looku Looku! Eyeing is a habit that all Nigerians possess whether they like to admit it or not. It practically runs in our veins. If you annoy or piss off a Nigerian, take a moment to just look at their eyes. Even the quietest ones of them all can use their eyeball movement to give you the shock of your life.
Sometimes, it’s done unconsciously with no exact intent. They use it as a mode of expression to convey a particular message to someone they would rather not speak to.
